Last week we covered what to wear with black jeans and how they were a good alternative to blue jeans. Today we’re going to be talking about another stylish alternative that’s a bit more daring; colored jeans.

Colored denim jeans are an eccentric choice, as men don’t often wear much color on their lower half. It’s usually reserved for blue, black, grey or brown. If men wear color at all, you will usually find it on their shirt or tie. This gives you an excellent and easy opportunity to separate yourself from the masses.

These jeans not for everybody, and if you’re still a fashion layman, you may want to stick to safer choices for now. (Read up on our fashion basics series to see what you should be focusing on. Start at Chapter 1: Proper Fit.) To pull these jeans off, you need to be able to feel comfortable and confident wearing them. If not, they will only make you look try-hard.

Knowing how to wear colored jeans may give you the confidence to pull them off, and they will instantly make you stand out as a fashion forward person.

Look 1: Anchoring the Jeans

The easiest way to wear colored jeans is by anchoring them with neutral items. Colored jeans stand out enough on their own, and there’s no need to add more statement pieces to your look when wearing them. You’re better off anchoring them with blacks, whites, greys and in some cases browns. Just keep the rest of the outfit toned down and let your jeans do all the talking.

Look 2: Combining Colors

If you’re feeling ambitious, you may want to pair your colored jeans with other colors. This makes an even greater statement than the previous look, and you should really be certain that this look fits your personality. This isn’t a look for guys that don’t want to be the center of attention. You need to be one confident sartorialist to pull this one off, so if you feel even the slightest discomfort doing this, then change to the previous look.

The reason this look is such an eye-catcher is because not many men understand color matching, so they refrain from even trying it. Those who do often mismatch or succumb to the rainbow effect. Don’t be one of those guys that overdoes it and keep it simple. Just wear one matching color, and you’ll make enough of a statement. It will show people that you’re one of those rare guys that does know how to match colors.

Just because you now know how to wear colored jeans, it doesn’t mean you immediately have to go off the deep end. You can ease into them by getting some dyed blue jeans. They will look different from your usual denim jeans, but not too much. If you’re not into bright colors at all, you can try muted shades like mustard, burgundy or military green. Start wearing them with neutral first, and then try your hand at matching them with colored items.

If you’re doing it right, you can wear colored jeans in any color you choose. Whether it’s yellow, green, orange or even pink, you will still look stylish and masculine.
